Breakfast Creek Hotel

breakfast creek hotelThe Breakfast Creek Hotel is probably one of Queensland’s and possibly Australia’s most famous pubs. Imortalised in the Midnight Oil song “Dreamworld” the Brekky Creek has been a popular watering hole for locals and tourist for over 120 years. The French Renaissance style hotel was built in 1889 by former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, William MacNaughton Galloway. Today, William is said to haunt the hotel as he fell to his death from the hotels balcony while drunk one night, around 5 years after the hotel opened. In 1900, the hotel was sold to the Brisbane brewery that is known today as Castlemaine Perkins who remained the owners but subleased the running of the pub for over 80 years. Castlemaine Perkins ownership explains why the huge XXXX beer sign still sits atop of the heritage listed building today, and also why you can still buy beer from a wooden barrel in the bar. The pub has seen a few renovations and additions over the years, but none have detracted from the grand old pub. First beer gardens were added then a Spanish restaurant and steakhouse was added in the 60s and more recently a neighboring disused electrical substation has been converted into a funky bar. If you are heading to the Breakfast Creek Hotel there are two must do items for your list, firstly a beer off the wood need to be sampled in the historic public bar and secondly, you need to pick out a steak from the butcher shop like display cabinet and then watch it get cooked up for your dinner. The Breakfast Creek Hotel is located at 2 Kingsford Smith Dve in the Brisbane suburb of Breakfast Creek.
